Christopher Kane put a number of black and white gingham ensembles in his Spring 2010 line. Michael Kors did similar, but used the iconic red gingham. Lacosta, Trovata, and Reyes have all done similarly.
It seems this spring picnic inspired frocks are a must have. Seemingly inspired by the 40’s and 50’s golden girls, these dresses are tres chic and are a nice “good girl” touch to your wardrobe. While you may not have the cash to afford these runway looks, there are always the cheaper alternatives. Relatively reasonably priced would be to search your local department store. Liz Claiborne, Ann Taylor, and lesser known brands are following these top designers and bring cheap (under $175) yet classically adorable dresses. Betsey Johnson also has a couple gingham designs, and even some shmexy gingham lingerie, if you want to wear it naughty 😉
As for your college pocket change friendly and durability, H&M has a cute one for $49.95. I just saw this week a black and white gingham dress, with flowers, on SALE at TopShop for $29.95. Forever 21 also has a few gingham looks on their sale racks. Wet Seal also surprisingly has some gingham dresses, but personally I don’t prefer their quality. But, for UNDER $15 you can’t beat that price, even on the sale racks of your favorite stores.
Now, some ideas on how to punk it out; If you have solid colored doc martens or other grune-esque boots I think they would look good. Maybe throw on some ripped tights and a leather jacket as well.
If you want to sweeten it up and play up the feminine, ad some white flats and a pastel cardigan, maybe a cute headband. This look is great for a pin-up style theme. People to look to for inspiration: Brigitte Bardot, Ingrid Bergman, Marilyn Monroe.
Grab your boy, throw on some gingham, and go for a picnic in this beautiful weather.
