Layers of Warmth

The temperatures are dropping very close to freezing, and so fast this year! I don’t know about you but I feel like it generally doesn’t get that cold until December, though this year winter is rearing it’s ugly head a little sooner that I was expecting. Lucky for me, a brand new Uniqlo opened up right by my work! If you haven’t heard me wax poetic about the wonders of HeatTech before, well, you’re clearly new here. Every winter I stock up on the Japanese made basics with their built-in warming technology in preparation for the North Eastern weather. With the opening of their newest mid-atlantic stores meant good shopping (admittedly, twice during the Grand Opening weekend). And with everything under $50 the prices truly can’t be beat. I mean, $10 tees and socks? YES PLEASE.  I stocked up on gifts for my family in New England, cozy socks for Z, and some beautiful layers for myself, including this shawl and turtleneck; the perfect layers for our first frigid weekend.

Same Old Love

One of my favorite things about style versus fashion is mixing high end and low end, old and new. I love the dichotomy of it all. I love the way fashion cycles through trends, updating classics every twenty years or so.

Take this look; I’ve got the ubiquitous button-front skirt, an update from the late 60s/70s trend of mod meets boheme. Then I’ve got the vintage handbag, and vintage silk scarf, mixed with the modern OTK boots Tech turtleneck.

Dressing for winter without bulky layers
When the temperatures are cold I’m not a happy camper. I’ve had legitimate frost bite twice and used to have full blown anxiety attacks during bitter New York winters. I also don’t like dressing in bulky layers, and I really don’t like losing my sartorial edge to the forces of winter. Over the years, though, I’ve managed to find the warmest layers that are thin enough to not look like you’re a marshmallow. So here’s a peak at what I wear to stay warm -and cute-during these cold spells!
