Monthly Musings Vol. 3

living rooms vogue

image via Vogue

It’s July already!? I swear it feels like summer just started and I had just finished posting my June musings. I seriously can’t believe summer is half over (and that I haven’t been by a pool or a beach yet!)! Send help in the form of self tanner and pool floats, plz.

On to the best things I’ve read so far this month:

  1. These living room styles through the ages are dreamy! I love that my own home has a mix of so many styles and inspirations.
  2. I recently stumbled upon the series of Motherhood around the world on Cup of Jo. As a woman who loves traveling and learning about cultures it’s been an exciting read! One of the things that struck out to me the most, though, is that a mother in Kenya they could only find blonde haired, blue eyed baby dolls. Upsetting much?
  3. I’ve just started getting into the Listen Money Matters podcast and their episode about SoFi was so intriguing; who knew you could save an average of $19,000 while repaying your student loans!?
  4. I, like every social media obsessed girl, love SnapChat. and I’m totally already fantasizing all the GeoFilters I could create for events and my neighborhood using this super easy tutorial! Watch out World, QSS is going into SnapFilters!
  5. If you’re thinking about switching jobs read this first! I wish I had before entering the real work force.
  6. YOU GUYS. NYC just announced for FREE feminine products in public spaces. If you follow me on Twitter, or know me in real life, you know that this makes me so happy I could (and maybe did) cry. This is such an important thing and I can’t wait to see which cities follow suit.
  7. I haven’t traveled at all in June, so I’m left with a little wanderlust on the mind. I’m thinking a tropical birthday getaway this winter a la this rocky coast.

Wishlisting:  After watching The Intern I’ve decided I really need some high waisted wide leg trousers for my workweek wardrobe. Here’s a lust-worthy pair and here’s an affordable pair; which do you love best!? I’ve got espadrille fever and I’m loving the ones from Soludos; there’s so many great pairs it’s hard to pick! And they’re all under $100!

What’s been your favorite finds this month!?

Gift Guide: 13 Books for The Blogger on Your Lists

https://i0.wp.com/lovagemagazine.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/must-have-fashion-books.jpg

Bloggers are fans of wishlists, this I know. With the holidays just around the corner, I wanted to do a series of wishlists, all non-apparel. This week is the first, and I’m going to discuss the best books in the business for anyone in your life interested in fashion! Many of these I already own, and are ones I highly recommend. The 3 I do not own are on my own wishlist, as I’ve heard great review!book wishlist1: The Boss of You
I own this book; it’s highlighted, underlined, crammed with notebook pages of my own notes. It’s full of exercises and steps to get you where you want to be in your business, whether it’s owning your own store, or the business of blogging, or anything!

2. A to Zoe
I love this book for many reasons; it’s a great coffee table book, it’s by an intelligent and iconic stylist, and goes over anything and everything you could need to know about dressing for various events and curating the perfect wardrobe.

3. Writing for the Fashion Business
This book was recquired reading for my college degree, yet it’s something I go back to time and time again and definitely suggest to anyone who takes writing for their blog seriously, or has aspirations of becoming a fashion writer.

4. Alexa Chung’s IT
This book is SO NEW to the market, yet has come with some great reviews. A collection of photos, blurbs, and stories about the iconic “it” girl is inspiration enough for any blogger coveting the “it” factor.

5. Fashion of the 20th Century
Another great coffee table book, this one is for the blogger who is visually stimulated, as it covers 100+ apparel ads spanning the history of fashion.

6. Man Repeller: Seeking Love, Finding Overalls
As a long time follower of the musings of Leandra behind Man Repeller, I was super stoked when she wrote a book. One of my favorite things about her blog was her way with words; her whitty rhetoric, her uncanny ability to perfectly use SAT level verbs to describe fashion, and her effortless analogies. While I have yet to pick this baby up, I need to. And so does every blogger you know!

7. The TeenVogue Handbook
This book is perfect for the fashionista in your life who has yet figured out her niche, or where she wants to go within the industry. I bought this book in college when I was at that level, and the in depth descriptions of the positions and jobs within the fashion industry helped give me a better overall view of the business, as well as helping me hone in on my favorite aspects.

8. The Fashion Book
Dictionary-like, this mini-book offers basic information about iconic designers and fashion terminology alphabetically. The cover and size also makes it a great reference book to keep on your desk or night stand! There’s also a heftier, larger version available perfect for the coffee table!

9. Fifty Dresses that Changed the World
If your blogger wants to run the world with the air of sartorial intelligence, knowledge of the iconic fashions is necessary. This book will show what it takes to make a stand out piece and to be inspired by the greats.

10. Lauren Conrad’s Style
Another celebrity penned book, this one talks about style basics, proportion, and how to dress for both the ‘burbs and the city life. Probably my all time favorite celeb book.

11. Lauren Conrad’s Beauty
LC can do no wrong; she always looks flawless, which is why she’s been on our radar for so long. I mean, do I really  need to be the one to tell you how long its been since Laguna Beach was on the airwaves? Instead, read this book and take beauty tips from the gorgeous star.

12. Born to Blog
Not yet in my position, but a book I’ve skimmed through before and love. It’s great for those just beginning to ponder blogging for fun or to make it a business. Born to Blog offers easy steps with thorough explaining to help you get off on the right foot.

13. Vogue The Covers
Last but not least, every blogger would love this iconic book of inspiration. Whether for their bookshelf, desk, or coffee table this book showcases over 120 years worth of fashion history, beginning from the days when Vogue was merely sketches and Sears ads.

Do you own any of these books? What do you think of my picks for your blogger this season!?

Spring Home Wishlist

Notting Hill is a district in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea in central London. It is a cosmopolitan district known as the location for the annual Notting Hill Carnival, and for being home to the Portobello Road Market. This past winter we decided to forego any home improvements. It was cold, we’d already spent 4+ months working HARD on our new home and wanted to give ourselves (and our wallets) a break. After leaving for South Africa in snow and coming back to full-on spring complete with cherry blossoms in bloom, we realized we were ready to dive in headfirst to the home stuff again!

If you follow me on Twitter or InstaGram you’ll have already seen that we’ve been hard at work. In a mission to beat JetLag we wandered Ikea until closing time, sleepily indulging ourselves into anything green and “easy to care for”, and that was just the beginning. Our deck that was built last fall is barren, so we’re hunting for the perfect outdoor furnishings. We want to bring some of the in-home color outdoors, starting with red adirondack chairs and bringing in some toning neutral with a classic lattice outdoor rug. Next up, I’m ready to get my green thumb on; fresh herbs and veggies need to get in my cooking! I saw The Home Depot currently has starter trees to grow on your patio in the nice season that can be brought inside when the weather gets cold; perfect for our four seasoned home!

Spring Things

As for the yard (holy toledo this city girl has a yard!?) Z is hellbent on getting a classic picnic table, while I’m drawn to string lights for setting the ambiance for many backyard barbecues and margarita parties to come. To round out the yard I’m loving some fresh outdoor table settings; a fruity or veggie table runner is kitschy, while modern plating pulls it in for a more youthful flair. I have this vision of white plates dipped in gold, and I’m thinking they’ll have to be a DIY project similar to this one by Sarah Hearts.

Lastly, our welcome mat from when we first bought our home did not weather the winter well. I’m wanting something fun for spring, and lucky for me my girl Chela Mitchell has some great ones available, including this “My Other House is a Yacht”!

what are you doing to prepare for spring? What are you favorite picks for outdoor entertaining!? Seriously, share with me, inspire me! And be sure to follow me as I’ll be posting more home updates soon (after more South Africa snaps!)

Beachy Getaway Wishlist

It’s the middle of July. I have yet to go to the beach. Who am I even more? This year’s sandy vacations are starting late, the first one I’ll be headed off to is in two weeks time (I can make it, I can do it). I’m getting by by working my butt off to save some extra money for outlet shopping splurges and innumerable beachside margaritas. Oh, and pondering new items to bring with me! Here’s a peek into my beachy wishlist for this year:
Beachy Getaway Must Haves via Que Sera Sahra
Nothing says “beach vibes” quite like a gauzey caftan from Calypso St Barth; perfect for all day wear, no matter where my beach wanderings bring me.
if you follow me on Twitter, you’ll have noticed it has been like THE HARDEST thing in my life to find a swimsuit.Asos fuller bust bikini is a perfect mix of cleavage-covering and cut out bearing.
Mirrored Sunnies a la Ray ban via Urban Outfitters make reading/sleeping less of a spectation.
This Yes Way Rose tote is perfect to carry all my belongings from the house to the sand to the bar.
To pair with the bag, a bottle of 2012 Domaine Tempier Bandol Rose, yes WAY.
Book: Darling You Can’t Do Both And Other Noise To Ignore for some light yet positive reading.
Pendleton Towel via South Moon Under to stay dry and cozy while getting my tan on.
Fuji Instax to capture memories instantly. It was on my goals for 2014 to capture more on film, and what better way!

Have you been to the beach yet this summer? What are your beach must-haves?

Fall Wishlist 2013

This Fall I’m dreaming of more versatile and conservative pieces; I blame the most conservative city in the world, my new home of Washington DC. I think my style has been maturing, well, forever; it’s always maturing and evolving as I change as a person, yet this move has prompted a bigger change than usual. Then again, maybe it’s just my comparison and perspective. I’ve taken out a number of my piercings, starting shrinking my stretched ears, letting my hair grow and flipping it, as well as hiding my nose ring more often than not!

Finders Keepers dress, $225 / Burberry Heart Print / Dr Marten Boots  / Jeffrey Campbell  bootie / La Mer watch / Vogue Beanie / Tom Ford CatEye sunglasses

This fall, I’m craving prints and accessories. The 3.1 Philip Lim for Target collection hits the nail on the head with the growing in popularity envelope end bags and leopard prints (because you can never have enough leopard!). I’ve been eyeing cat eye sunnies for awhile, and the Tom Ford ones are perfect; every time I’m in a department store I just have to try them on again! Ever since February I’ve been lusting after the Burberry Heart Print tops, for guys and girls, and have even found a couple close knock-offs! Other accesories I’m craving include a graphic beanie, a layered statement necklace, and anew watch, because I’ve found that my diamond and white watch doesn’t quite go with everything, and these La Mer wrap watches are understated and fun!

Lastly, I’ve been having a love affair, for about 6 months…with a new Aussie…Brand that is! Finders Keepers Label gets me awestruck every time I see something new from their collection. Their mirror prints and body hugging silhouettes are sexy, edgy, and oh so feminine. This long sleeve dress is a perfect fall staple for a Date Night!

As for shoes, I’m in desperate need of some new combat-style boots, and I’m partial to the stigma of Dr Martens. I’ve also been aching for some ankle booties, similar to a chelsea boot for MONTHS now. Sadly, I’m picky and attempting to be budget savvy so these JC’s are just for oggling, for me at least!

What are you coveting this fall?

Fall Beauty Wishlist 2013

fall beauty buys

As I go through life, I go through phases of not wearing make up, save for the occasional touch of concealer and mascara, to weeks where I toy with make up on the daily, playing with techniques and such. Growing up I was the girly-tom-boy, if that makes sense. I wanted to roller blade, but for holiday photos I NEEDED red lipstick, even if my grandmother huffed and puffed about how I was too young. I’m a simple gal, who never got into wearing a lot of make up. As a cheerleader, I didn’t paint my nails until after high school. Nowadays, I’m in one of those moods where I want to play with smokey eyes do my nails every other day, and throw on some lipstick to up the sex appeal, or something like that.

For fall, I’m craving new and old. My favorite mascara has been out for awhile, so while I use cheap shit I’m missing my Benefit “They’re Real”. I’m also missing my Nars “Orgasmic” blush, a perfect shade for a slight hint of cheek toning. As for adding on, I’m enamored with the blue Marc Jacobs Beauty nail polish; dark and iridescent, it’s a perfect color for fall, especially with blue being such a hot color this season! I had heard that Pixi Lip gloss was a glossy, yet non-sticky product, and with long hair that is commonly down I NEED to try this! I’d love to toy around with a Naked palette, and am totally coveting a classic matte nail for a simple fall manicure.  Lastly, I just LOVE Balenciaga’s Florabotanica scent; I think I’m due for a new perfume anyway and this one has been on my list for almost a year!

What are you craving for your body and face this season?
